TTFN: How to Make a Free iPhone Ringtone Using iTunes

Tech Tips for Nerds (TTFN) is my series of blog posts where I share the information I obtained after laborious Google searching for some tech problem or other. Ignore these if you’re not nerdily inclined, I’m just archiving them here to help the next Google searcher.
The other day I turned the Sad Laugh of Woody Woodpecker into my ringtone for certain callers, by exporting the audio and converting it into a ringtone for my jailbroken iPhone. Then I wanted to do another one today and had already forgotten how I did it the last time. That’s why I’m doing the whole TTFN series, to archive this kind of info, so after another laborious Google search I figured it out again. The other way involved dragging something into my phone’s directory structure directly, but this one is easier and you don’t even have to jailbreak your phone! PROBLEM: Turn hilarious clip of Cal-pal Selene Luna screaming “CLOWWWWNNN-LOTTTTT” into a ringtone I can assign to her contact in my iPhone.
SOLUTION:
* Select the song in iTunes that I want to use as a ringtone. Protected AAC files will not work.
* Right-click on the song and select Get Info
* Go to the Options page and select the start and end times for the ringtone, also use treble boost on the EQ setting and slide the volume slider to 100%
* Right-click on the song again and select Convert Selection to AAC. (Cal sez: if you don’t see that option when you right-click, you’ll need to go into iTunes>>Preferences>>General>>Import Settings>>”Import Using: AAC Encoder”) and you’ll probably then want to go back and reset it to MP3 once you’re done.)
* Right-click on the converted song and select Show in Finder
* Drag the .m4a file from the Finder window to your desktop
* Go back to iTunes and delete the converted song from iTunes. If you skip this step, double clicking on the .m4r file to import the ringtone into iTunes will not work properly.
* Right-click on the song file on your desktop, select Get Info and change the file extension from .m4a to m4r.
* Open Finder and locate the Ringtones folder underneath your iTunes folder. The path should be /Users/~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Ringtones. If you don’t have this folder, create it.
* Drag the renamed song file from your desktop to the Ringtones folder in Finder.
* Double-click on the .m4r file now stored inside the Ringtones folder. iTunes should change to the Ringtones folder under Library near the top and start playing the ringtone.
* Drag the ringtone to your phone.

Paramedics had to break down the door to his Manhattan home

DJ AM, the sought-after disc jockey who became a celebrity in his own right with high-profile romances and a glamorous lifestyle, was found dead Friday at his apartment, which had drug paraphernalia in it, a law enforcement official said.
Paramedics had to break down the door to his Manhattan apartment before they found his body at about 5:20 p.m., the official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because family hadn’t been notified. There was no evidence of foul play, the official said.
He died nearly a year after surviving a South Carolina plane crash that killed four people and seriously injured rock musician Travis Barker.
Goldstein, 36, was a deejay for hire who performed at Hollywood’s most exclusive parties and was admired by music aficionados. He also was famous for past relationships with the reality TV star Nicole Richie, the daughter of singer Lionel Richie, and with actress-singer Mandy Moore.
Goldstein was critically injured last September when a Learjet crashed on takeoff in Columbia, S.C. The plane was transporting Goldstein and Barker, a drummer for the pop punk band Blink-182, after a performance; the pair had formed the duo TRVSDJ-AM.
Barker and Goldstein were burned, though Barker was injured more severely. Goldstein had to get skin graft surgery, but about a month later, he was performing again, joining Jay-Z on stage.
At the time, he told People magazine he was grateful to survive.
“I can’t believe I made it,” he said. “I’ve prayed every night for the past 10 years. There’s a lot more to thank God for now. ... I was saved for a reason. Maybe I’m going to help someone else. I don’t question it. All I know is I’m thankful to be here.”
Goldstein rose to fame several years ago as highly sought-after DJ whose beats kept the dance floor packed and clubgoers hypnotized.
Celebrities and fans instantly shared their reactions to his death on Twitter, where “RIP DJ AM” was the No. 1 topic Friday.
“I’m stunned. Rest in peace Adam,” singer-songwriter Josh Groban posted.
“So horrible. In shock,” wrote TV host Maria Menounos.
“Thoughts and strength goes out to friends and family,” entertainer Solange Knowles wrote.
“He survived a deadly plane crash and now THIS,” blogger Perez Hilton tweeted. “I can’t stop crying.”
Representatives for Moore and Barker didn’t immediately return telephone messages seeking comment on the DJ’s death.

An arrest has been made in the death of an "American Idol" contestant who was struck and killed by a car over the weekend.23-year-old Daniel Bark was booked on charges of death by reckless driving as well as leaving the scene of an accident in the death of Alexis Cohen, who appeared on "Idol" in seasons 7 and 8 but failed to win a trip to Hollywood.
Cohen was struck on a road in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. Her body was found by two pedestrians ... it was found 350 yards from Cohen's parked car.
Cohen received notoriety for her post-audition rant in Season 7.
If convicted, Bark faces a maximum of 15 years in prison.
